SIGHT- What to see, Persepolis

The Skinny- Persepolis is a 2007 award-winning animated film based on Marjane Satrapi's autobiographical graphic novel of the same name. The film was written and directed by Satrapi with Vincent Paronnaud. The story is a Bildungsroman about a young girl coming of age against the backdrop of the Iranian Revolution, and shows how her family's hopes for change were slowly dashed as the Islamic fundamentalists took power, drastically curtailing personal liberties, forcing head coverings on women and imprisoning thousands; the story ends with Marjane as a 21-year-old expatriate. The title is a reference to the historic city of Persepolis.

The Verdict- Persepolis is a very interesting coming of age story about a young girl's search for her identity set amidst the background of Iran's revolution's turmoil. Marjane is an interesting character and it is very easy to relate to her experiences growing up, finding her place in the world, and the alienation she experiences no matter where she goes. The film is visually pleasing and I also enjoyed the history lesson in Iran's political development. Still in some theaters and coming to DVD soon, check it out.

Three and a half stars out of five ***1/2
